I heard that live without a good food, friends and sleep are not such a living..but them what about travelling?. Travelling can also fulfil your senses so living becomes more like a daydream on its own right.
This blog is for those who enjoy travelling and meeting other people, culture, etc because becomes an important part of life and does allow you to open your mind too.
This time, my journey took me to Buenos Aires in Argentina and I thought it would be easier to rent an apartment for few days within the central city.
Somewhere to stay
I found very interesting Buenos Aires district names' or called Barrios and my attention did go for Barrio 'Palermo Hollywood' because it did host most of the local actors, singers and TV stars during the nineties so it does have a good record of nightlife too Who knows I might lucky enough to meet actress-singer Natalia Oreiro.
To find my temporary home around this area, I choose as a booking engines, airbnb.com, mercadolibre.com.ar, and Booking.com. It was surprising the variety of properties I could get from this websites. Thus, I narrow my search and wanted an apartment with swimming pool or 'pileta' as it called here on top of the building, as well as personalised attention from the owner plus the advantage of being near restaurants or entertainment.
As a result, I got a very comfortable studio in Paraguay street which funny do the owner decide to name her property Paraguay Vintage within the premises of the Paraguay building ( perhaps it should be named as the triple P apartment ). 'Paraguay Vintage', become my apartment choice and with it a good touch on retro decoration too.
Since its' foundation as a Barrio in the late 18th century, Palermo's housing and business grew rapidly during the 19th century and now there are few Palermo's within Palermo. We have Palermo Soho, Palermo Nuevo, Palermo Viejo, Palermo Chico and Palermo Hollywood all of them surrounded by parks, shops, restaurants and bars.
A classical city
Buenos Aires capital has 48 official barrios and Palermo is the largest neighbourhood in this capital. There are histories of Palermo name origins being the first in remembrance of the patron of Palermo in Sicily and the influx of Italian immigrants who arrive in this country. The other version goes on the purchase of this vast land by an Italian immigrant Juan Domingo Palermo during the late 17th century. Which one of the versions, do you think is better?
My first impression of Buenos Aires was its' amazing variety on building designs combining between new and old ones. The capital principal's main roads are wide which at some barrios contrast with its' narrow streets full of trees ( some of them need a good trim but still were looking good. ) I was not sure about the graffitis if they were left for a specific artistic purpose. Most of the streets of this capital are backdated from colonial times and founding some graffiti minimise the glamour from its architectonic past. To my view Buenos Aires is a combination of well know capitals within Europe so does its' people to some extent, who by the way they were looking too busy in their minds with a reserved friendly smile.
To have a better view of Buenos Aires and get flattered by Buenos Aires' traffic, there is a good tour company which provides cycling tours within the capital. The one I took is 'Urban biking' and have good tour guides so you can have a good brief of the cities common spots as well as be taking good pictures. Aside of seeing the Casa Rosada, Puerto Madero, Boca, local parks, museums and more tourist sites, is worthy in cycling around the Costanera of the Parana river. The idea is to head for the forest grounds that ones were part of the city's landfills and now they were converted into the 'Reserva Costanera Sur'. There is an interesting view from this angle of the city which has become an important part of the city wetland nature reserve.
From the Far west to the South
Argentina is very well known for its quality beef and I got the opportunity to visit a peculiar restaurant with a taste of the Amercian far west ( American cuisine ) in Palermo called 'Kansas'. I have to say the food and service were excellent with a time record in serving the dish of your choice that can exceed any expectations. This is a place where you can eating lots of food and to get value for money. Now if you want to try an Argentinian beef house with a local taste, there is nothing better to visit 'La Caballeriza'. I need to advise you, to get to most restaurants you would need to book well in advance to get a table.
To enjoy one of the latest 'boliche' or club bars in Palermo, the 'Rosebar' would provide you with a good music and good atmosphere. Nor the last to mention goes for bar 'Belushi' from which its stylish venue would seduce to stay all night. Once again you have to ensure to book in advance so when you turn up don't get rejected.
Peruvian connection
Buenos Aires has attracted people from all over the world and with it, a culinary cuisine too so is not difficult to find from American restaurants ( without referring to the fast food chains, please) Mexican, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Indian, French, etc. From all this particular mix of culinary varieties has also arrived in Argentina the influence of the Peruvian cuisine that has charm local beef eaters to swap for fish too.
To get some of this Peruvian food experience in Buenos Aires capital, there is a fantastic restaurant in Palermo named 'La Mar'. La Mar's owner is a very well know Peruvian chef; Gaston Acurio, who has all readily opened restaurants in Lima and abroad. This restaurant would provide you with a good menu of Peruvian dishes in combination with a comfortable decor in all its premises. A Peruvian 'ceviche' dish or 'Pisco sour' cocktail anyone?
Two to Tango
Every country has a distinctive dance so it does Argentina and it's tango. The best way to learn this dance with lots of fun in a friendly environment is by going to 'La Bicicleta' tango school located in Palermo. After the lessons, you can enjoy meeting local people and from abroad by having a dance and practice your new skills.
So far my experience of living in Buenos Aires has been good and with it the apartment 'Paraguay Vintage' where I am staying. Now, meanwhile writing this blog from the top of the roof, I would continuing enjoying the view of this town and have swum too. Until next time, enjoy your travelling.
